English Language Matters: Courses

We have a wide range of NZQA-Accredited English language courses available to suit your needs.

You are assessed before beginning your course, and enter at one of the five levels offered. Entry is on any Monday and teachers meet weekly to discuss students' progress so that you will move to the next level as soon as you are ready.

You choose how long you would like to study and how many hours per day. There are morning, afternoon, and evening classes. An orientation around Dunedin is given in the first week to make you familiar with your new community, and help is given where necessary so that you feel at home as soon as possible.

Certificate in English for Communication

Learn 'alive' English, as the students call it. Listen to the television, video and audio tapes, the radio and pick up language you can't usually understand. Learn lots of idioms from authentic material such as the weekly letter written by the teacher, newspapers and magazines. Learn grammar in a natural context with appropriate textbooks and materials. Speak confidently with native English speakers who visit the class weekly and talk in small groups. Gain skills needed to get a job, assimilate into the high school environment, and feel confident in this new society.
(NZQA Accredited course: Level 3).

Certificate in English for Academic Studies

IELTS, TOEFL Preparation Studies
Study the language needed to perform successfully in the tertiary sector, focusing on all the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Learn language and techniques needed to succeed in the IELTS, TOEFL TOEIC examinations using all the latest materials and pedagogical techniques. Practise IELTS interviews to familiarise yourself with the structure of the interview, and develop further confidence. An Intermediate level of English is the minimum requirement for students to benefit from these courses.

English for Business Studies

Gain the English language skills and strategies needed to communicate effectively in an English-speaking business environment. Acquire a sound knowledge of basic business practices and principles, and an understanding of the English-speaking work ethic and environment. Use appropriate language in practical ways in realistic business situations. Talk with professionals in a wide range of businesses, and increase opportunities to find work in an English-speaking environment.
(NZQA Accredited course: Level 3)

Optional Modules:


  • High School Studies
    Concentrate on your individual needs after school in a small group setting where you get extra attention. Learn the skills needed to succeed at high school as well as acquiring the skills needed to make friends.
  • Cultural Studies
    Study the language and custom of New Zealanders in order to better understand the society around you through the mass media, as well as appropriate, authentic texts. Discuss the similarities and differences between the different cultures in the class and learn more about New Zealand and the world.
  • Cultural Activities
    Walk from school to the many art galleries, the Public Library, the ornate railway station, the Settlers' Museum, indoor swimming pool, and great cafes and restaurants. Explore the wider community by visiting places of interest and importance to you, such as the Otago Peninsula to see penguins, seals and albatross, the Maori marae and church, the many beaches and gardens. Enjoy rugby, soccer, golf, tennis, horse riding, swimming, bowling and ice-skating. Learn yoga, pottery, flower arranging, flax weaving, photography and other activities of interest.
